IAF attended the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights (SCCR38) in Geneva last month.
The SCCR38 agenda continued the work of previous sessions on: the Broadcasting Treaty; Copyright Limitations and Exceptions for Libraries & Archives; Limitations and Exceptions for Educational and Research Institutions and for Persons with Other Disabilities; and a range of proposals for further work, most importantly on the Artist’s Resale Right (ARR).
IAF once again gave support for the work WIPO is undertaking on ARR with its task force, even though some member states are preventing ARR from being included on the agenda permanently. At this point the ARR task force has met to establish the scope of its work. IAF will continue to engage with the ARR task force and supports WIPO including its greater representation of visual artists in the task force.
With growing pressure to devalue copyright in recent years, IAF has worked on documents such as The Case for Copyright, which outlines the essential principles for building a case for copyright and licensing. We are working with our members to find new ways to educate decision-makers about copyright and authors’ issues in the future.
Music Canada and the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) co-presented the particularly positive side event An industry transformed: securing sustainable growth for today’s digital music industry.
