Society of Authors: AI survey results published

Serena BaroneAI, Authors rights, News, UK

The Society of Authors (SoA) has published the results of their survey on generative artificial intelligence (AI) systems. It surveyed 12,500 of its members and other authors throughout January 2024, receiving around 800 responses. The survey included questions regarding respondents’ experiences of generative AI and its potential impact on their professional careers.

The results demonstrate not only deep uncertainty about the future role of generative AI in the profession, but also the significant impact it is already having on careers and livelihoods.

The SoA survey reveals one third of translators and a quarter of illustrators are losing work due to AI. Furthermore, the SoA reported an almost unanimous consensus from respondents emphasising the need for action and the urgent implementation of regulation for generative AI, based on the principles of transparency and consent.
