The International Authors Forum (IAF) attended the Regional Conference on the Artist’s Resale Right (Droit de suite), held on 29–30 April 2026 in Punta del Este, Uruguay. The event was organised by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), with the cooperation of the Uruguayan Copyright Council and the collaboration of CISAC and the Asociación General de Autores del Uruguay (AGADU), an IAF member. Other IAF active members form Latin America, including, including SAVA from Argentina, AUTVIS from Brazil and SOMAAP from Mexico, took part in this important event for the creative sector.
IAF was represented by María Fernanda Mendoza, the Forum’s regional consultant, who contributed essential insights to the discussions. Her interventions focused on current legislative frameworks, the challenges of the secondary art market, and operational models to ensure that creators receive fair remuneration from subsequent sales of their works.
The meeting was also attended by representatives from the copyright offices of Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Mexico, Panama, Peru, the Dominican Republic and the host country, Uruguay. In addition, visual artists’ organisations from Panama and Colombia, which are not yet collective management organisations, were present. Notably, the conference also included for the first time representatives of art galleries and dealers from Argentina, Panama and Uruguay, who shared their perspectives on the art market.
As a direct outcome of the discussions and working sessions held over the two days, WIPO is preparing a strategic Roadmap. This technical document will bring together all notes, comments and contributions from experts and participants, with the aim of outlining the next steps and priority actions to strengthen the practical implementation and regional harmonisation of this right.
Finally, in view of upcoming international engagements, it was announced that Uruguay’s representative will take the floor at the sessions of WIPO’s Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights (SCCR), where they will formally present the experience, agreements and conclusions arising from this regional meeting.
IAF will continue to champion the Artist’s Resale Right internationally and to support its members in promoting fair compensation for visual artists in every market where their works are sold.
