The Authors Guild’s 2018 Author Income Survey has found that the incomes of authors in the US have fallen to historic lows to a median of US$6,080 in 2017, down 42% from 2009. The survey included traditional, hybrid and self-published authors. The Authors Guild has noted that the findings are particularly concerning as it could have a detrimental effect on the ability of a diverse range of authors to properly invest in creating, as full-time and mid-list literary writers will be hit the hardest. This follows similar findings around the world including the ALCS survey that found a 42% decline in median incomes from 2005 to 2017.
