The Greek Parliament has recently passed a package of new laws relating to copyright. Included in this package is a new law to implement the EU Collective Rights Management Directive regulating collecting societies. Provisions to implement a Greek Public Lending Right (PLR) system was also approved, and so the EU Rental and Lending Directive is finally being implemented in Greece and the International Authors Forum is delighted that this step has finally been taken. The system is not perfect, but it is a start, and more work will be needed to encourage the Greek government to further develop their approach. However, it is good to see another country establish a PLR system that will help ensure authors get paid for the use of their works.
