UNESCO has officially launched the Call for Applications for UNESCO World Book Capital 2028, inviting cities and municipalities around the world to submit their proposals and showcase their commitment to books, reading, literacy and access to knowledge.
The UNESCO World Book Capital programme recognises cities that demonstrate a strong commitment to promoting a culture of reading and learning through an ambitious programme of activities implemented over a twelve-month period. Each designated city becomes a global ambassador for books and literary culture, highlighting the essential role that books, authors and creators play in building inclusive, knowledge-based societies.
The IAF is proud to contribute to this initiative as a member of the UNESCO World Book Capital Advisory Committee, alongside UNESCO, the European and International Booksellers Federation (EIBF), the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), and the International Publishers Association (IPA). Through its participation, IAF ensures that the perspectives and contributions of authors are recognised as a fundamental part of thriving literary ecosystems.
The programme offers cities an opportunity to develop and showcase initiatives that promote reading, support authors and creators, strengthen access to books, and encourage literary engagement across communities. Beyond the year of designation, World Book Capital aims to generate sustainable impact by creating lasting connections between citizens, books and knowledge.
Following the designation of Rabat (Morocco) as World Book Capital 2026 and Medellín (Colombia) as World Book Capital 2027, UNESCO is now inviting applications for the 2028 edition.
Cities and municipalities wishing to apply must submit their applications in English or French through UNESCO’s online application form by 23:59 (Paris time) on Wednesday, 7 October 2026.
The International Authors Forum encourages cities with ambitious programmes for books, reading and literary culture to take part in this global initiative and celebrate the transformative role of authors and literature in society.
