As the AI Summit, taking place 10-11 February in Paris, the International Authors Forum (IAF), together with 37 other international organisations, has signed a call to reiterate core values regarding AI and intellectual property. This marks the first time that intellectual property is being discussed in relation to AI at this level, underscoring its global importance.

AI model providers must respect copyright by seeking the express consent of rightsholders. Transparency is crucial, ensuring rightsholders are informed about how their works are used in AI training. Operators must seek licenses and negotiate authorisation with rightsholders, ensuring lawful and fair use. Fair compensation is essential, and non-compliance must be met with effective sanctions to uphold these rights and build trust in AI development.

This issue transcends borders, as demonstrated by the Hiroshima AI process discussed at the G7, G20 conclusions, and international treaties, highlighting the global need for AI to respect intellectual property rights.

The Paris AI Summit carries special responsibility as trusted, ethical, and sovereign AI is only possible when intellectual property rights are respected. The IAF, together with 37 other organisations, calls for a future where AI development is aligned with copyright and related rights, urging states to seize this opportunity to uphold fundamental rights.
